measure fuel in tanks accurately

how can you tell by looking inside of fuel tanks how much fuel is left? would dipping a plastic ruler help tell you if you have 5 gal, half tanks or 10 gal?

I made a dip stick when I refilled the tanks from empty after shipping the aircraft to Hawaii.  Measuring stright down from the fill port, 3/4" is five gallons and 2-3/4" is 10 gallons.

thanks so much for the info. i will use that as a reference and when i do get a dry tank, will place 5 gal in and measure .
